Retiree Club Corner, March 2007: The members of the Retiree Club are pleased to present an article in the Local’s News Bulletin as we feel it gives incite to not only the current members of the Club as to what we do in our meetings and outings, but also reaches those retirees who are not yet members of our group or, retirees who are unable to attend. At a very interesting talk to us by a member of the Police Fraud Squad, PC George finished his presentation with the following advice for the prevention of “Scams” which have become a way of life by a “Knock at the Door” or on the phone saying “Congratulations, you have just won ………”, and leave you with an empty purse if you fall for them.- Demand ID before you letting anyone in the house and, if you allow them in your house do not let them wander.
- Get estimates from other vendors before contracting for a job. Do not pay more until the job is completed to your satisfactions and, pay with a cheque. Do not pay cash – there is a ten day cooling off period after deposit and that is the law!
- Never give Credit Card or your PIN number. Leave Birth Certificate, Health Card, SIN Card at home.
- Use a shredder for any documents with your identity on it.
- Order and review report.
- Inform the police, bank, Credit Card company, driver’s licence office, to place a lost or stolen warning on your file. Be sure you obtain a new licence.
On the more entertaining side, some of our members just returned from a two week trip to Portugal. This is just one of the places our chairperson Theresa, makes the arrangements for us and, it gives you a tip as to what we get up to. Maybe this will encourage you to join with us for these specials. We do of course have other more local trips as well as lunch / shows on a more regular basis. All we do is pay and show up. No haggling with entertainment agencies or not bothering because we are a little lazy. We have a person quite willing to give her time to make everything happen for us.Even though the weather has been a little hazardous this year, attendance at our meetings has not been deterred – this makes us think we must be doing something right. The legion now does lunches and many stay for lunch and a beer before making the trip home. With all of this going on, we still have room for those of you who have not yet joined us. We welcome all of our retirees to come along and see if you like it. Usually we find they see some of their old workmates and decide to come back again, just to talk over old times and to participate in the social side of our club. We get a lot of information that helps us on many topics, including those that the Local provides and, keeps us up to date on what is going on with and in the Local. The ball is in your court, all we need is to see you on the first Monday of the month at 10:00 a.m., in the Royal Canadian Legion hall, 110 Jutland Road, south of Bloor Street West, south on Islington Avenue, turn right at the 7-ll store You will find it is just a short distance to the Legion Hall on the north side of Jutland, opposite the church. Parking is available or, just a short walk if using public transportation. There are no stairs to climb as everything is on the ground level. Ken Magnus
