Retiree Corner: It’s time to remind all the Retirees that we have a really healthy CLUB available for YOU. Sometimes one gets the feeling that retirement means just that and, that we are being “put to pasture” – not so! We are and can be, very much alive and well. It was for this reason that our Club came into being in 1985. A long time working at the trade had developed many a friendship, and this was thought to be a good enough reason to keep that up, by meeting those fellow workers at least once per month. It has worked well for many of our retirees, now members, but unfortunately there are a lot more retirees who could be taking advantage of the Club.

It’s not like a Town Hall Meeting where you listen to a lot of nonsense you already know – not only do we have meetings but they are a way of keeping abreast of what’s going on, including Unions, and a way of keeping in touch with old friends. After the meeting we periodically have a “loony” lunch, provided by the members, and a few hands of Bingo to follow.

We will be having our December meeting shortly, which is a short one, followed by some hearty singing of Carols while our Christmas dinner is being organized by the Legion, before we go home. All other meetings are no longer than a couple of hours. In the month of August we have a picnic instead of a meeting and all we have to do is bring our lunch and drink, the “fun and games” are all organized for us so again, we just have to show up and enjoy.

We have other perks being that our Entertainment Committee’s efforts to keep us happy by making arrangements for day trips (some longer) such as theatre outings and lunch shows. We also go on some extended trips to such places as Spain, Portugal and, we have even tried Cruises. So, you see, you could be missing out on much more than just a monthly meeting.

We meet in a Canadian Legion Hall, which provides a $5.00 lunch, which many of our members stay and take advantage of (it saves cooking when you get home). We have plenty of room for more of our retirees to join with us and enjoy the company, many of whom may be past work-mates. The cost is only $10.00 per person to join and, spouses are welcome to join as well. Interested?, then call Ken Billingham, our membership Chairperson, at 416-259-1978 – (or leave a message and Ken will call you back).

What have you got to lose? It could very well be a real gain. This invitation is to ALL our Local’s retirees and we are confident you will not be disappointed by making that choice. In the meantime our present members wish you a Merry Christmas and Healthy, Happy 2008.

Our January meeting is on Monday the 7th. Shall we see you there? We can hear your saying “GOSH!! WHERE’S THAT PHONE!!
