Retirees’ Club Corner, December 2008

Although the title reads “Retirees” this column could very well be of interest to the membership as a whole after all, at some time in the near or distant future, you too will be joining that group so, please keep reading and we will tell you what YOUR club is all about.

During your working period, you acquire many friends on the job and our club was formed in order that those friendships be continued once retired.  This past year many have reached (or are nearing) that time, so why not join us at our meetings?  You may also find some of those former workmates are already members and can renew your acquaintance with them. Also, the fact of missing out on the many excursions our Entertainment Committee arrange, be they one day or more trips, theater and show outings, etc.  All we have to do is pay the ‘group’ fees so, we save money and the bother of doing it ourselves!  At our last meeting we had a tour company showing on screen a great trip to Myrtle Beach for a few days and all the shows that are there.  This is just one excursion, but will give you an idea of what’s in store for the future 2009 season.  At the moment we are eagerly looking forward to the Christmas dinner following the December meeting.

On the meeting side, which last no longer than a couple of hours, we have presentations from the Local, keeping us up-to-date on what is happening in the national and local unions.  For our first meeting in January, we will be having Randy Bruce, Administrator of our Pension and Welfare Programs, to answer any questions we have on these issues.  So, as you can see, we keep our interest on things that are pertinent, especially for retirees.  We also are affiliated with the Congress of Union Retirees of Canada (CURC) and are in touch with other seniors’ organizations who are working for the benefit of people like ourselves.  Now, why not pay us a visit on Monday, January 5th, 2009 (no charge!) and learn what we are all about, even just to hear what Randy has to say!  Surely you are concerned and would like to hear more about these matters.

You may ask “where and when are we meeting”?  Meetings are held the first Monday of each month, except September (Labour Day) and December (Christmas Dinner) which are the second Monday, with a coffee, tea and donut interval $1.00, and periodically a ‘Loony Lunch’ followed by bingo also $1.00.  In August we do not hold a meeting, but the third Wednesday we have a picnic at Boyd Conservation Park (Islington Ave. (North of Hwy. #7) that includes fun and games.  All commence at 10 a.m.  The meetings are held in the Canadian Legion Hall, 110 Jutland Road (off Islington Ave. South).  Parking is free, but if using public transportation get off at the 7-11 store stop and a short walk on Jutland (north side and opposite the church).

We welcome all our retirees to join with us.  Fees are $10.00 per year, so how about it!  You never know what you are missing out on!!
