Donations for Nepal

Unifor members are saddened and anguished over the earthquake tragedy in Nepal.  The Unifor Social Justice Fund has acted swiftly to contribute to the global relief effort with a contribution of $25,000. We are calling on Unifor local unions, staff, and members to show their solidarity with the people of Nepal by making additional contributions.

Your contributions can be made immediately at http://www.oxfam.ca/unifor.   Any donations that are made by Unifor local unions or members at this website will be tracked as coming from Unifor members. Importantly, the contribution of our Social Justice Fund and all further donations for Nepal by Unifor members until May 25 will be matched by the Government of Canada.

The most current information we have is that more than 8 million people are estimated to have been affected by the earthquake which hit last Saturday – more than a quarter of the population of around 28 million.  The death toll currently stands at more than 6,600 and is continuing to rise as reports filter in from harder to reach areas.  Thousands of homes have been completely destroyed or severely damaged.    Around 34,000 people are living in makeshift camps and thousands more in the open because buildings are unsafe.

Unifor is working with Oxfam Canada with the goal of reaching 350,000 people hit by the earthquake, providing clean water, toilets and shelter.  In addition to being a long-time partner of Unifor on social justice and development issues, Oxfam has already been working in Nepal for more than 20 years with local organizations and the government.

Thank you for joining in solidarity to help the people of Nepal.
